Route overview
Stillwell Avenue → boardwalk east past the amusement area → aquarium-side stretch → Brighton Beach Avenue. Sand and paid attractions are optional, not part of the walking route.
Walk south on Stillwell Avenue to the boardwalk. Orient toward the ocean, then turn left to head east. This keeps the ocean on your right and makes the direction easy to follow.
Pass the amusement-area frontage
Stay on the boardwalk past the ride area. You can see the amusement structures without entering them. Move aside for photographs and keep a path open around busy beach entrances.
Continue east along the ocean
Follow the uninterrupted boardwalk toward Brighton Beach, passing the aquarium-side stretch. This is the longer open section: assess sun, wind and your energy before continuing.
Finish near Brighton Beach Avenue
End where Brighton Beach Avenue meets the boardwalk area. Head inland here for departure, or retrace the boardwalk to Stillwell. Do not add the entire eastern boardwalk unless you have planned the extra distance.
Getting there and terrain
Arrival and departure
Use the Stillwell Avenue area for arrival and the Brighton Beach area for departure. Consult the MTA planner for current service and station access instead of assuming trains or elevators are operating.
Boardwalk decking may have gaps, rough patches or sand. Beach access introduces sand and is optional. Sun and wind exposure can make a level route tiring.
These notes describe the suggested route, not an accessibility certification. Check official access information for the entrance and facilities you need.
Practical tips
This guide does not include amusement rides, aquarium admission or swimming.
A quieter-looking beach does not indicate whether swimming is permitted; follow lifeguard and posted instructions.
Bring sun protection; shade is not continuous along the boardwalk.
A shorter option
Walk east for 15–20 minutes and return to Stillwell instead of committing to Brighton Beach.

Follow the harbor-side path south from the Bay Ridge Avenue pier toward the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. This is a linear waterfront walk, distinct from the upper Shore Road park paths and their neighborhood entrances.
About 2 miles · 50–75 minutes Easy · long exposed stretch
Climb into the neighborhood’s namesake park, then return along its surrounding streets. The compact distance makes room for a pause on the hill, but the elevation makes this a different outing from a flat waterfront stroll.
About 1 mile · 35–60 minutes Moderate · hill and crossings
Follow the park’s main drive circuit for a substantial loop with a straightforward return to your starting point. Long Meadow and the lake provide reference points; woodland side paths are optional excursions rather than necessary turns.
About 3.4 miles · 80–110 minutes Moderate · rolling hills
