Route overview
Pier 1 → Pier 2 uplands → Pier 3 → Pier 4 shore → Pier 5 → Pier 6. Optional walks out onto the piers add distance to the main north-to-south route.
Enter from Old Fulton Street and find the main park path. Begin with the Brooklyn Bridge behind you and head south. A brief look from the Pier 1 waterfront helps distinguish the elevated Heights promenade from the park below.
Pass the Pier 2 uplands
Follow the connected park paths south. Use the through route when recreation areas are busy; entering a court or activity space is not necessary to continue the walk.
Compare the middle piers
Continue past Pier 3, the Pier 4 shore and Pier 5. These sections alternate planted spaces with open river views. Choose one pier detour if you want a closer look rather than trying to trace every edge.
Finish at Pier 6
Follow signs south to Pier 6 and the Atlantic Avenue end of the park. Decide here whether to leave or retrace the shoreline. A return to Pier 1 doubles the main route before any pier detours.
Getting there and terrain
Arrival and departure
Enter at Old Fulton Street and leave near Atlantic Avenue. Starting on the waterfront avoids having to choose a descent from Brooklyn Heights; consult the park’s visitor information for entrances and transit.
Mostly paved park paths with exposed sections. Detours, events and individual pier access can change; follow park signs rather than assuming every shoreline edge is open.
These notes describe the suggested route, not an accessibility certification. Check official access information for the entrance and facilities you need.
Practical tips
Pier-edge excursions are optional and can turn a short route into a longer outing.
Watch for distinct pedestrian and bicycle paths at connections.
Use the official park information to locate current facilities; do not rely on seasonal services being available.
A shorter option
Walk from Pier 1 to the Pier 2 area and return for a shorter riverfront outing.

Combine Montague Street with the elevated promenade and a return through residential streets. This route gives you skyline views without a bridge crossing or the descent to Brooklyn Bridge Park.
A compact route through DUMBO’s street grid and riverfront spaces, with the Manhattan Bridge framing one view and the Brooklyn Bridge framing another. It stays north of the long pier walk in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
About 1 mile · 35–60 minutes Easy · uneven streets
Use Red Hook’s street grid to reach Louis Valentino, Jr. Park and Pier, then return through nearby blocks. This small loop focuses on one public harbor viewpoint rather than promising a continuous walk through the working waterfront.
