Route overview
Montague Street west → promenade north → Orange Street → Hicks Street south → Montague Street east. The promenade is above the waterfront park; there is no need to descend to the piers.
Begin at Court Street and follow Montague west toward the water. Use the crossings at each junction. The storefront stretch gives way to a quieter residential setting as you approach the promenade entrance.
Join the promenade
At the west end of Montague, follow the public entrance onto the promenade. Turn north for the skyline view. Look down toward the waterfront park to understand the two different levels of walking routes.
Leave toward Orange Street
Continue north to the Orange Street end of the promenade. Use the public exit toward the neighborhood; avoid detours down to the park if you want to keep this route short.
Return along Hicks Street
Walk east on Orange to Hicks Street, then south on Hicks to Montague. Turn left on Montague to return to Court Street. Observe the houses from the sidewalk, leaving stoops and entrances clear.
Getting there and terrain
Arrival and departure
Start and finish near the Borough Hall area. Use Montague Street as the direct connection to the promenade; verify any alternative park descent separately.
Sidewalks, crossings and a generally level promenade, with slopes on connecting streets. Do not assume nearby stairways to the waterfront are part of this walk.
These notes describe the suggested route, not an accessibility certification. Check official access information for the entrance and facilities you need.
Practical tips
Keep this elevated route separate from the lower park if you have limited time.
Use public benches for a pause; residential steps are not seating areas.
A promenade closure is a reason to change the walk, rather than seek an unofficial way through.
A shorter option
Walk straight down Montague to the promenade and return the same way, omitting the residential loop.

Walk south through the park’s riverfront spine from Pier 1 to Pier 6. This route emphasizes the changing shoreline and pier landscapes; it does not include DUMBO’s street grid or a bridge crossing.
About 1.5 miles · 45–70 minutes Easy · mostly level paths
A compact route through DUMBO’s street grid and riverfront spaces, with the Manhattan Bridge framing one view and the Brooklyn Bridge framing another. It stays north of the long pier walk in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
About 1 mile · 35–60 minutes Easy · uneven streets
Cross the East River above the traffic on the bridge’s pedestrian promenade. This is a point-to-point crossing, with a clear Brooklyn street-level finish; DUMBO is an optional continuation rather than part of the stated distance.
