Cross the East River above the traffic on the bridge’s pedestrian promenade. This is a point-to-point crossing, with a clear Brooklyn street-level finish; DUMBO is an optional continuation rather than part of the stated distance.

Route overview
City Hall → Manhattan approach → bridge towers → Brooklyn approach → Tillary Street. Choose this walk for elevated views and the structure itself; choose the DUMBO guide for a shorter waterfront outing.
Begin beside City Hall Park at the signed Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian approach. Use the pedestrian entrance, rather than following a road or bicycle ramp. Start your crossing here so the full approach is included.
Climb toward the towers
Follow the continuous promenade toward Brooklyn. The climb is gradual but sustained. Look at how the cables meet the towers; stop at a wider spot to observe them without obstructing people moving behind you.
Cross the river span
Continue between the towers. The open stretch is the place to compare views upriver and toward Lower Manhattan. Keep moving through narrow sections and step aside before taking photographs.
Finish on the Brooklyn approach
For the main route, stay on the walkway to its street-level end at Tillary and Adams. The Washington Street stair exit is an alternative for DUMBO, but introduces stairs and changes the finish. Do not follow vehicles onto the bridge ramps.
Getting there and terrain
Arrival and departure
Plan your arrival around City Hall in Manhattan and your departure around Downtown Brooklyn. The street-level approach avoids the Washington Street stairs, but this is not a guarantee of a fully accessible journey.
Exposed elevated pavement with a long incline, crowds and little shelter. The Washington Street exit has stairs; remain on the main approach if stairs are unsuitable.
These notes describe the suggested route, not an accessibility certification. Check official access information for the entrance and facilities you need.
Practical tips
Walk in the stated direction if you want to finish in Brooklyn; reverse it for a Manhattan finish.
Bring a windproof layer when conditions warrant it. There is no indoor refuge on the span.
Allow extra time for crowds. Extending to DUMBO adds street walking beyond this guide.
A shorter option
Turn back before the river span for a shorter approach walk; remember that returning doubles the distance already covered.

A compact route through DUMBO’s street grid and riverfront spaces, with the Manhattan Bridge framing one view and the Brooklyn Bridge framing another. It stays north of the long pier walk in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
About 1 mile · 35–60 minutes Easy · uneven streets
Combine Montague Street with the elevated promenade and a return through residential streets. This route gives you skyline views without a bridge crossing or the descent to Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Walk south through the park’s riverfront spine from Pier 1 to Pier 6. This route emphasizes the changing shoreline and pier landscapes; it does not include DUMBO’s street grid or a bridge crossing.
